The Novel Concept and Treatments for Cancer

Antiangiogenesis Therapy

Antiangiogenesis Therapy

Tumor growth depends upon tumor angiogenesis. In other words, angiogenesis is necessary for tumor spread and metastases. Angiogenesis inhibitors for the treatment of cancer have now been approved by the FDA in the USA and in 28 other countries, including the European Union.
The first FDA-approved angiogenesis inhibitor, Avastin (bevacizumab), blocks a single angiogenic protein, VEGF, produced by about 60% of human tumors. It was the first angiogenesis inhibitor to demonstrate significant prolongation of survival in colon cancer. Significant increase in survival has also been demonstrated for lung cancer and breast cancer by antiangiogenic therapy.
In China endostatin analogue, Endostar, has been approved by SFDA for clinical use of cancer. It is an antiangiogenesis drug with multiple targeted sites and effective for non-small cell lung cancer. There are evidences showing Endostar is also adaptable for treatment of a lot of tumors.
